There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson's exploitatively titled adaptation of Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel, Oil!, is by turns hypnotic and maddening.
On one hand, I couldn't take my eyes off Daniel Day-Lewis, playing hardscrabble-miner-turned-oil-magnate Daniel Plainview, or Robert Elswit's magnificent cinematography of the bleak California landscapes (actually filmed around Marfa, Texas) where Daniel strikes oil.
