Upton Sinclair's socialist proposals for overhauling the California economy made him the enemy of business interests, the film industry and the media. They waged a concerted campaign to destroy his candidacy, making use of advertising and media manipulation on a scale never seen before in politics. All of the daily newspapers were opposed to Sinclair. The campaign laid the ground for the aggressive media politics that have developed since then.
