Upton Sinclair
Upton Sinclair epitomized the spirit of muckraking journalism and literature, especially with his ground-breaking expose of the meat-packing industry, The Jungle (1906). A staunch socialist and critic of capitalism, he narrowly lost the 1934 California gubenatorial race (defeated in part by Hollywood propaganda), but later earned a 1942 Pulitzer Prize for an installment in the Lanny Budd series of socially-conscious stories, and helped found the ACLU.
