Painting a picture of a meatpacking industry little changed from the days of Upton Sinclair-with knife-wielding workers standing elbow-to-elbow in a sea of blood as they dismember animal carcasses-the House Committee on Government Operations yesterday called for a crackdown on safety violations in the nation's slaughterhouses.
The committee said work in the meatpacking industry has become so dangerous that to try to reduce work-related injuries, the Labor Department should conduct a "special emphasis program" similar to one it did in the chemical industry.
