SAN PEDRO The 82nd annual Liberty Hill Day will take place Sunday to commemorate the arrest of author Upton Sinclair in San Pedro in 1923, an event that gave rise to the American Civil Liberties Union.
Sinclair was reading aloud the Bill of Rights to a group of striking dockworkers when police stepped in, igniting opposition from politicians, labor leaders and journalists and establishing San Pedro as the epicenter of the civil liberties movement that followed.
