Critical Reputation of The Jungle

With its muckraking, its Zolaism, and its Socialist Party conclusion, The
Jungle was destined to provoke controversy, both political and literary.
Unfortunately, in the early years of the book's career, many critics were
influenced in their literary judgment by their political convictions. Only
with time have critics generally been able to arrive at more balanced, more
objective views of The Jungle.
