Plot Development

Structure: Jurgis' rise to affluence and power is, in true naturalistic
fashion, suddenly reversed by an accidental meeting.

Flow and ebb. Staying on in his Packingtown job, Jurgis - on Scully's advice
- becomes a "scab" when the Meat Workers' Union calls a strike. As thousands
of strikebreakers are imported to replace strikers, Jurgis becomes a boss.
Illegally, the strikebreakers are housed in the packing plants, where there
