Chapter 17

Plot Development

Structure. Sinclair structures Chapter 17 in a sequence of
jail-court-jail (like Chapter 16), but this time all three sections contain
fully dramatized action on the scene-summary-scene-summary pattern (like
Chapter 15).

Jail. Jurgis' new cellmate is a young safecracker who declared war on society
after a "great company" had stolen his invention.

Trial. Judge Callahan accepts Connor's verision of the fight - Jurgis had
attacked him because he had fired Ona - and sentences Jurgis to thirty days'
hard ...
