Plot Development

Structure. Again, Sinclair develops a chapter by ebb and flow, this time
a rise and fall in the life of Marija followed by a fall in the hopes of
Jurgis.

Motif repeated. Sinclair repeats his motif of love stymied by economics
as he develops a romance between Marija and Tamoszius that in some respects
runs parallel to the Ona - Jurgis romance. Since the wedding feast (Chapter
1), the little musician has loved the powerful woman, whose admiration for his
talent blossoms into sexual passion. The ...
