ORILLIA, Ont. - This lakeside hamlet has its own municipal alter ego: the fictitious town of Mariposa, as lovingly portrayed by the celebrated Canadian humorist Stephen Butler Leacock. He is one of Orillia's two favorite sons - the other being songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.

Though not necessarily a household name south of the 49th Parallel, up here Leacock (1869-1944) is often regarded as Canada's Mark Twain. And it's a good bet that many Canadians may consider Garrison Keillor to be America's Stephen Leacock.
