Hal Holbrook doesn't play Mark Twain. After nearly half a century of portraying the timeless author and humorist, Holbrook is Mark Twain when he takes the stage.

"Mark Twain is an American original and Hal Holbrook's characterization is an American national treasure," said Paul Pierce, artistic director of the Springer Opera House in Columbus, Ga., site of a recent Holbrook show.

Next year will be Holbrook's 50th anniversary of presenting "Mark Twain Tonight!"

"I've never missed a year," he said.

His season runs from September to May ...
