It's become almost de rigeur. Film a special documentary for PBS ("Civilization," "Cosmos," "The Civil War"), and also come up with a lavish and expensive companion book. These handsomely packaged coffee- table books are usually sufficiently caffeinated to zoom onto most bestseller lists and hang around.

Because of their pedigree, it's easy to dismiss them as history, science or in this case biography-light. But for Ken Burns' several books in this genre, that's just not true. His ...
