Excerpts from "the first rough draft of history" as reported in The Washington Post on this date in the 20th century. The front page coverage of Mark Twain's death at age 74 was an exercise in melodrama rather than a review of a great literary life. That came on page two. An excerpt from The Post of April 22, 1910:

Redding, Conn., April 21. -- Samuel Langhorne Clemens, "Mark Twain," died painlessly at 6:30 o'clock tonight of angina pectoris. He lapsed into coma at 3 o'clock this afternoon and never recovered consciousness. It was the end of a man outworn by grief and acute agony of body. ...
