He Was the son of a Huntly farmer and became an inspirational literary figure - but now his work is seldom read in his own country.
This weekend the Aberdeenshire town which was home to George MacDonald will celebrate the contribution made by a man who was hailed by the Victorians as a literary legend.
The J.K. Rowling of his time, MacDonald, who was born in 1824, was a friend of leading writers such as Dickens, Tennyson, Wilkie Collins, Mark Twain and Ruskin.
His works are still celebrated as far afield as New Zealand and the United States.
