Chapter XXXI
Tom And Becky In The Cave
This chapter returns to Tom and Becky at the picnic. When the two begin
to tire of the hide and seek games the children are playing, they wander away
on an exploring trip of their own. At first Tom makes smoke marks to direct
them on their return journey. But they encounter a roomful of bats, and run
into several passages without marking their path. They continue wandering,
enthralled by the great natural beauty of the cave, until Becky remarks that
they are now so far away ...
