Chapter I

Y-O-U-U Tom.

The first character Mark Twain introduces us to in this novel is the
hero's Aunt Polly. As the story opens she is calling for Tom, who doesn't
answer. She pulls her spectacles down and looks over them, then puts them up
and looks under them - obviously her eyes aren't so bad she needs the
spectacles to see through. They are mainly for "style." She continues her
search for Tom, but - in Mark Twain's words - "resurrects nothing but the
