DIRECTOR Bernard Rose has turned Count Leo Tolstoy's classic romantic novel ``Anna Karenina'' into a murky melodrama that is so heavyhanded it sinks under its own weight. It is not surprising, since this is the same director who vulgarized Beethoven's private life in the similarly overblown ``Immortal Beloved.''
