1. Discuss the attendant moral issues raised by Anna's infidelity.
Answer: It has been said that Tolstoy did not want the reader to condemn
Anna but to pity her. There was never a question of whether Anna was
immoral - this was always the case in Tolstoy's mind. But he considered that
ultimate judgment must rest with God, not with fallible men. This is the
meaning of the epigraph to the novel, "Vengeance is mine; I will saith the
Lord."
