May 4--A century ago, Leo Tolstoy penned those lines to build up the Russian tragedy of Anna Karenina. Back home, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been living the quote up for the past year or two.

First came the firm faith in its own abilities as the sole alternative to the "natural party of governance". Then came the breakthroughs in the financial and foreign policy realms. And with it, arrogance. The good work of three years were undone one by one in record time. The rest, as they say, is history.
