Leo Tolstoy once wrote that happy families are all alike. He was wrong, at least when it comes to the finalists for the title of 1990 Illinois Hispanic American Family of the Year.

The seven families are happy but different.

There's the Arias clan, with twin daughters and a commitment to politics; the Sanchezes, whose patriarch overcame the limitations of a sixth-grade education to start his own business and help migrant workers; the Verdugo-Perezes, with a father who worked maintenance while the mother pursued a Ph.D.
