Ralph E. Matlaw, 63, a Russian literature scholar and professor at the University of Chicago, died of cancer Tuesday at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center.
He was professor emeritus in the department of Slavic languages and literature. He retired in 1988 after 23 years in the department.
Mr. Matlaw was the author of the 1957 book The Brothers Karamazov: Novelistic Technique and edited several translations of classics of 19th century Russian literature, including works by Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.
