Tolstoy continues to analize the causes of historical events, using as
his subject the retreat and flanking movement of Kutuzov's army, which
eventually put the Russians in a position to destroy the French army of Murat,
Napoleon's commander. Tolstoy makes again his central point that circumstances
and not the particular will of any one man or group of men brought the event
