Chapter One:
In Petersburg, in spite of the occupation of Moscow, life goes on
normally. At Anna Sherer's salon, we hear that Helene is ill. The news of the
battle of Borodino arrives and there is great rejoicing. Unexpectedly, the
news of Helene's death is announced. Official news has it that she died of ah
heart malady; rumor has it that she took an overdose of drugs because of
unhappiness. Just after this, the fall of Moscow is announced. The Emperor
Alexander resolves to fight on.
