Chapter One:
In this chapter Tolstoy continues his explanation of his historical
method. Man can only understand laws of motion by selecting arbitrarily some
elements of that motion. However this leads to human error, as is illustrated
by the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise (in which by continuously dividing
the distance he must cover before he reaches the tortoise, it is demonstrated
that Achilles will never catch the tortoise; this is of course absurd). The
