Chapter One:
The first chapter of this book is an analysis of the first stages of
the campaign of 1812. The author's contention that the course of events is out
of the hands of the planners (a fortuitous fact) is again advanced. It was the
unforeseen abandonment and destruction of the great city of Smolensk by its
own inhabitants which, more than anything else, inflamed the hearts of the
Russian people with hatred of the invaders.
