Chapter One:
It is the year 1812. Tolstoy interrupts his narrative, as he will now do
from time to time, to analyze the elements of the historical process. The
historians, he says, will give such and such reasons, as if the causes were to
be located in the official documents. It is impossible to isolate one single
cause or even a single group of causes. Innumerable causes combine to bring an
