Chapter One:
It is the year 1806. Nicholas Rostov returns home to Moscow on leave. It
is a scene of joyous welcome. The world, notes Nicholas, in spite of his fears
that it will have changed, is still the same. Sonya is there. Denisov is
introduced. "Darling Denisov," shouts the irrepressible Natasha, hugging and
kissing him. She is in love with someone else, as usual. Sonya has remained
