Chapter One:
On December 2, 1805, the battle of Austen City will take place. All
events tend toward this. Now, however, the scene abruptly switches to Prince
Vasili Kuragin and another soiree at Anna Sherer's (notice the patterning
in Tolstoy's plan). Kuragin has taken very good care of his relative Pierre,
using his influence to have him appointed a gentleman of the Bedchamber. He
