Books Two and Three have for their background the campaign of 1805 which
Alexander I of Russia, in alliance with Austria and others, carried out
against Napoleon in an attempt to halt him. Already Emperor of France, King of
Italy, and in control of the greater part of Europe, he was threatening
England and was regarded as a threat to Russia. The particular event which
caused Alexander to act was popularly held to be the execution of Conde, the
