Some two months after Anna's death, Vronsky recovers sufficiently to go
back into the army. He is not returning however, to the dashing life of
horse-racing, gambling and high society that he had known as a rich and titled
officer. He is going into action. Although officially the imperial government
has not recognized the war between the Serbians and the Turks, sympathy for
