Dolly, her children, their governess and the old princess are spending
the first summer after Kitty's marriage at Pokrovskoe, Levin's estate. Other
visitors include Varenka, Kitty's friend, and Sergei Ivanovich Koznyshev,
Levin's half-brother. Kitty, who conducts her household affairs with unfailing
care, has no little trouble getting enough fowl for all these people to eat.
Levin likes the idea of having the rooms filled with many voices, but is
constantly afraid that one of the children will bump into Kitty. ...
