Two months later Kitty's health becomes a family problem. After the
family doctor had tried the usual remedies of cod liver oil and iron, a
specialist, who was celebrated among the princess' set, is called in. Since he
is still a young man, Kitty finds his examinations distasteful. Her father,
who had little faith in doctors, listens to the medical discussions with
contempt; the doctor has difficulty coming down to the level of the
