Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer and author of one of the world's greatest novels, War and Peace. He was born on his family's estate in Tula, a province of Russia near Moscow. After studying at the University of Kazan, Tolstoy joined the Russian army and fought in the Crimean War. He resigned from the army in 1856 and traveled through Europe. On his return to Russia, he married and started a school for peasant children on his country estate. He kept a journal describing his experiences.
