From Faith in a Seed, by Henry David Thoreau, a collection of Thoreau's previously unpublished writings published by Island Press/Shearwater Books, in Washington, D.C. Bradley P. Dean, the editor of the volume, reconstructed Faith in a Seed from thousands of pages of Thoreau's notes, including the detailed daily account of the local flora in Concord, Massachusetts, that the writer kept until his death in 1862. A longer excerpt from Faith in a Seed appeared in the May/June issue of The Sciences.
