Wild Fruits By Henry David Thoreau. Edited by Bradley P. Dean. Norton. $29.95. Late in his sadly abbreviated life, Henry David Thoreau spent hours each day walking or boating, observing the flora and fauna, meadows and rivers of his native Concord, Mass.

Before he died of tuberculosis in May 1862 at age 44, he placed the unfinished manuscript of Wild Fruits in a wooden chest. By the time it reached the New York Public Library 78 years later, the manuscript was a confusing pile, compounded by Thoreau's difficult- to-read handwriting. Scholars let it be.
