Henry David Thoreau - naturalist and philosopher - sang the praises of the natural pond, calling it, "the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature."
Thoreau might well be the spiritual patron of every American gardener since who has enjoyed the oasis of a pond in his or her garden - more than 18 million of them this year, according to Karla Sperling, president of the National Pond Society. She said that the number of water gardeners in this country has increased dramatically in the past few years.
