American writer Henry David Thoreau (1817-62) distrusted the 19th century's growing dependence on technology. Wild nature, not machinery, sustained his spirit. "Henry talks about nature as if she'd been born and grew up in Concord [Massachusetts, Thoreau's birthplace]," said a neighbor.
