Chapter XI: Higher Laws
This chapter treats of sensuality, of the animal instinct in men.
Thoreau's thoughts have been turned down these paths by glimpsing a woodchuck
running across his path as he came home at night from fishing. He reflects
that he "felt a strange thrill of savage delight, and was strongly tempted
to seize and devour him raw; not that I was hungry then, except for that
