Henry David Thoreau was an American writer and student of nature. He
was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and spent most of his life in
that area. Thoreau attended Harvard University and taught school for
many years.
In 1845, Thoreau built a tiny hut on the shores of Walden Pond near Concord and lived there for two years. He wanted to try living as simply as possible, growing his own food and watching the day-to-day changes in nature.
