The wealthy Elton family played a vital role in the development of Clevedon, which grew from a small farming community in to a popular Victorian seaside resort.
They also provided sites for the hospital, schools and churches and campaigned vigorously for improvements to sanitation and drainage. Through Sir Charles Elton, famous men of their time, poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and novelist William Makepeace Thackeray came to know the North Somerset seaside town.
