Vanity Fair was first published in book form in 1848 and immediately
established its thirty-seven-year-old author, William Makepeace Thackeray, in
the front rank of English novelists. Almost everything in Thackeray's varied
and sometimes rather catch-as-catch-can life up to this date contributed to
the novel. His birth in Calcutta, India, for example, into a family of
Anglo-Indian civil servants, suggests the source of some of the specific
detail of the book ("Boggley Wollah," "The History of the Punjab," etc.), but,
