William Makepeace Thackeray was a popular English writer of stories
and novels. Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India. He was sent to
school in England and attended Cambridge University. He later studied
art in Paris. Thackeray's first attempts at writing were made only
to earn money. His wife, whom he married in 1836, became mentally
ill after the birth of their third daughter. She never recovered,
and Thackeray was left to rear his children alone.
