In the spring of 2002, when Mira Nair was promoting Monsoon Wedding, she
had one major question in her mind - what would be her next project?
Monsoon Wedding had already been such a success abroad, winning the top
award at the Venice Film Festival. She was suddenly hot property. One of
the projects, she talked about at that time was a comedy with Meg Ryan.
Then in the summer of 2002, news reports said Nair was going to make a Nair
version of William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair, a book that had been
close to her for a long time.
