It is difficult to imagine William Makepeace Thackeray not using the word
maverick in his voluminous novel Vanity Fair.
But Mira Nair, who counts the book as one of her favorites, and who made a
$23 million movie out of it, confessed not knowing the word when she was
told she would receive the Honorary Maverick Award at the Woodstock Film
Festival in Los Angeles.
'I had to look it up in the dictionary, but I like what I saw,' Nair told
the Associated Press.
