Clive Staples Lewis' Malacandrian race in 'Out of the Silent Planet' may have been inspired by Jonathan Swift's Houyhnhnm society in 'Gulliver's Travels.' A linguistic relationship has even been found between the two first friends of the protagonists in both literary works, Gulliver's horse and Ransom's Malacandrian horse. However, both works differ significantly in the treatment of racial equality.
