OAKLAND Jonathan Swift really should be writing this World Series column. He could better understand how Jose Canseco, a modern Gulliver, has been staked to the ground by today's Lilliputians, the Cincinnati Reds.

Going into Saturday night's Game 4, Canseco of the fading Oakland A's was batting .091 for the Series.

His shortcomings have been blamed on a mysterious finger injury. Supposedly, he slammed a refrigerator door on the digit. But wait. His career postseason average is .219. Surely, he hasn't been waylaid by a refrigerator through 88 October turns at bat.
