Jonathan Swift was an English writer. His best-known work is his book
Gulliver's Travels. He was a skilled satirist (one who uses writing
to make fun of people's stupidity and false pride).
Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland, of English parents. He went to England in 1689 and became a secretary to an English statesman. In 1694, Swift returned to Ireland and became a Protestant minister.
