It is said that Lyman Beecher, the famous 19th century Congregationalist minister and father of Harriet Beecher Stowe (who wrote the single most influential book in American history), believed so profoundly in the ethic of hard work that on stormy days he would sometimes simply move dirt from one side of his basement to the other.
