Jun. 14--LITCHFIELD -- In honor of the 196th anniversary of her birth today, the Litchfield Post Office and the town historical society celebrated the new Harriet Beecher Stowe commemorative stamp, the ninth in the U.S. Postal Service's Distinguished Americans series.

Postmaster Vincent Polacco and Catherine Fields, of the Litchfield Historical Society, unveiled a poster of the 75-cent stamp Wednesday to a crowd inside the society's South Street building.

Stowe, best remembered for her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin," was born in Litchfield in 1811 ...
