The 2005 Harriet Beecher Stowe Lecture will be held at the Mercantile Library, downtown, on June 14.

Linda Lear will speak on Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring" and many other books on environmental issues.

The event begins with wine and hors d'oeuvres at 7 p.m., followed by the lecture at 8 p.m.

Lear is a senior research scholar in history at the University of Maryland, and a research professor of environmental history at George Washington University. She holds a bachelor's degree fromConnecticut College; a master's degree ...
